Become a SCCRI Teaching Artist

The SCCRI Teaching Artist Program offers professional, independent RI-based artists the opportunity to offer a class/workshop in one of SCCRI spaces. Classes may vary in duration (ex. 3 day, 6 week or greater session) and in time (ex. 1+ hours, depending on nature of class/workshop). Space is based on availability and class/workshop concept.

SCCRI Teaching Artists are art professionals who can provide high quality instruction in a variety of performing, visual, and literary art disciplines as well as health and wellness (yoga, pilates, etc.) to an multi-generational population. TA’s work as stewards of our mission to connect, cultivate and engage the community through the arts, but are independent art and/or wellness practitioners in the field.

ONGOING CLASSES:

Traditional West African Drum w/ Sidy Maïga: Thursdays, 7-8p

The workshops cover proper hand techniques as well as the cultural context of drumming in Mali. We also explore the essential elements that make up an African rhythm, including the break, accompaniments and solo phrases. By the end of the class, students play together as an ensemble. Finally, Sidy demonstrates some of his unique soloing skills.

Open Level

Students should have their own drum. Instructor can provide if contacted in advance.

Class fee: $15.

 

Tai Chi w/ Venson Jordan: Saturdays, 10-11:30a

A form of fitness, martial arts, and meditation that helps fine-tune focus, moods and stress.

All fitness levels welcome.

CLASS/WORKSHOP FEES*:
$90. for entire 10 - part series (if paid in full at time of registration). Adult 18-59yrs.
$40. for entire 10 - part series (if paid in full at time of registration). Youth 12-17yrs.
$40. for entire 10 - part series (if paid in full at time of registration). Seniors 60yrs +.

Single Drop-In:
$10. Adult (18-59yrs.)
$5. Youth (12-17)
$5. Seniors (60+)

 

Caribbean Rhythms Percussion Workshop w/ Jesús Andujar: Sundays, 4-6pm

Learn the rhythms and hand techniques of the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti. Play in community with the entire class and grow your skills as a percussionist. Students must have their own conga or bongo drum.

Beginner - Intermediate Level

CLASS/WORKSHOP FEES*:

$150. (entire 10 –week workshop paid at first class) – Adult (16+)

$17 for single drop-in class

Students must have their own drum. Preferred drum: conga or bongo
